PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

The Specialist, Pension Assets position is an exciting opportunity to join a small team of dedicated financial professionals. The Pension Asset Team supports CPKC’s board committees and senior management with ongoing oversight and administration of the pension plan’s investment portfolio of approximately $14.7 billion. The role also offers the opportunity to build and maintain strategic relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

The Specialist position will make significant contributions in some or all of the following areas:

  • Develop investment strategies by performing research, preparing detailed analyses, and creating presentation materials to support recommendations to senior management and board committees

  • Implement approved investment strategies by supporting with manager searches, conducting due diligence on proposed investments, reviewing investment agreements and completing portfolio transitions

  • Monitor investment performance and prepare reporting and analysis for senior leaders and board committees

  • Year-end reporting for company financials and annual pension plan financial statements including providing support to external auditors

  • Assist with managing pension asset operations, including forecasting cash flows and executing transactions such as cash transfers, expense payments, capital calls, and FX transactions

  • Support administration of CPKC’s pension fund assets in compliance with investment policies

  • Support the preparation of internal controls and SOX controls to support a robust control framework

  • Other duties as required

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Undergraduate degree in commerce, finance, economics, or other relevant field

  • Advanced knowledge of investment concepts and working knowledge of corporate finance, treasury, and accounting

  • 2 to 5 years of relevant work experience

  • Progress towards completion of CFA designation and/or pension industry experience preferred

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail

  • Strong organizational, time management, communication, and presentation skills

  • High level of proficiency with Excel and PowerPoint as well as familiarity with financial software products like FactSet and Bloomberg

  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders

  • Self-motivated individual who can take initiative to drive change and work independently with limited oversight
