TITLE: School Nurse for GIRESD Classrooms FLSA: Non association EXEMPT employee REPORTS TO: Special Services Supervisor

SUMMARY

To promote and maintain optimum physical health of the students and staff. Serves as a child advocate to ensure they reach their maximum learning potential.

General Responsibilities: The school nurse is responsible for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation and/or referral activities. The school nurse facilitates continuity of care by communicating with healthcare providers, families, school staff, and community agencies; and provides relevant education, counseling, and guidance to students, families and staff concerning health related issues. The school nurse upholds professional standards, MDE guidelines and other state and local statutes and regulations applicable to school nurse practice and adheres to district administrative policies and guidelines. The school nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational process by modifying or removing health related barriers to learning for individual students and promoting an optimal level of wellness; and provides relevant support to remove barriers for increasing student's independence in personal care. The school nurse provides personal plans of care for Medicaid service recipients within the school setting and properly handles confidential matters relating to students, student records, parents, staff as well as any other school-related issues.

Education and/or Experience: Licensed by the State of Michigan as a Registered Nurse. BSN or Bachelor's degree in health-related field Certified or eligible for certification as a School Nurse with MDE. Pediatric experience preferred. Valid CPR Certification with ability to complete AHA instructor certification.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties as assigned.

Ability to assume responsibility, display initiative, think critically, and exercise good judgment.

Communicate and collaborate with health care providers, parents/guardians, students and staff to create an individual health care plan that promotes safety and an optimal learning environment.

Serve as liaison/resource person for school personnel, administrators, families, community, and healthcare providers.

Provide health assessments and skilled nursing treatments for students as indicated through the use of appropriate equipment, techniques and resources.

The school nurse will assess the need for special healthcare of students. When needed the nurse will work with parents and medical providers to obtain the orders required by Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and outlined by Michigan Association of School Nurses (MASN).

Write, revise and implement Individual Health Care Plans (IHP), Personal Care Plans (PCSA) and Emergency Action Plans that include specific interventions, identification of expected outcomes and evaluation of care provided. These plans will delineate school nurse and other staff responsibilities to meet the unique individual needs of the students, which may include delegation of nursing tasks to Health Assistants and non-medical staff.

Administers or properly delegates student medications.

Implements medications/treatments in compliance with Physician/Physician Assistant Orders, State and Federal Laws, and Michigan Board of Nursing standards.

Educate and train classroom staff on performing health care related tasks needed during the school day.
