Job Description

Job Summary:

Manages a comprehensive range of legal services relative to employment law. Consults and collaborates with Human Resources on all issues of the law related to the organization's human capital. Monitors legal issues and implications concerned with discrimination, sexual harassment, health and safety, hiring and firing, as well as all other aspects of employee rights and responsibilities. Provides counsel regarding processes, roles and policies, standards and metrics that ensure the effective and efficient use of information in enabling the organization to achieve its goals

Job Duties:

  • Oversees activities of outside counsel retained to handle Labor and Employment matters;

  • Coordinates discovery on labor cases, EEOC, whistle blower cases and third party claims;

  • Communicates professionally and effectively with internal clients and the Sr. V.P. and General Counsel regarding litigated matters, including advising business leaders regarding risk mitigation and litigation avoidance;

  • Handles state and federal government workplace investigations such as those conducted by the EEOC, the OFCCP, the Department of Labor, and state human rights agencies;

  • Consults with business leaders based upon knowledge of current developments in the law related to labor and employment laws and jurisprudence;

  • Supervises witness preparation, oral arguments, mediations and arbitration and evaluates performance by outside counsel;

  • Participates in development of strategy with outside counsel for labor and employment cases and witness preparation, oral arguments, mediations, arbitrations and trials, in major cases related to areas of responsibility;

  • Assists with implementation and coordination of litigation hold procedures;

  • Prepares and presents employee training and development in the areas of risk mitigation and litigation avoidance, training for corporate executives regarding best practices and corporate compliance;

  • Manages corporate risk and improves operational efficiency while working to achieve compliance with regulations and laws governing enterprise information;

  • Exemplifies KCS Vision, Values, and Culture in each and every interaction with team, clients, and stakeholders.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree (J.D.) – Law

  • Minimum five (5) years legal practice experience

  • Minimum three (3) years in the practice of labor and employment law

  • Minimum one (1) year experience as an active participant in the pre-trial discovery process

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent academic record

Certification Requirements:

  • Active bar membership from any of the 50 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or the US Virgin Islands are required.

  • Must be able to obtain a Missouri license when begins work.
