Job Summary:

The PTC Application Engineer will lead the delivery and operations of critical Positive Train Control (PTC) Linux and Windows based distributed infrastructure and system applications environment. Will support the development, configuration and implementation of key PTC applications and infrastructure. The ability to work within a flexible, changing environment is a must as the PTC technology environment is new and evolving. Learning by trial and error, proof of concept, and detailed analysis will be critical to success. Will be required to provide 7 day x 24 hour on-call support on a rotating schedule with the other members of the PTC Applications Engineer team.

Job Duties:

  • Designs, configures, installs and supports various PTC equipment components from different vendors in various testing environments. This includes both back office datacenter components as well as remote installations at waysides and on locomotives.

  • Enables an infrastructure to combine labs and create a back office environment to provide common application services where needed

  • Supports locomotive device configuration and network setup and tests

  • Determines field deployment and configuration procedures for devices (procedures, install guides, etc.)

  • Provides field validation support for configuration and communication of devices

  • Provides Technical Support for Lab Setup and Support (Shreveport, KC, etc.)

  • Performs architectural design and implementation based on current and future system requirements.

  • Works closely with Data Center Services and Communications to coordinate IT services for PTC environment

  • Provides development support to both internal and external development teams with connectivity and access to virtual and physical devices for the different types of equipment.

  • Collaborates with the systems administration team and Database Administrators to deploy systems and solutions.

  • Acts as liaison on an engineering level between PTC Back Office team and other groups.

  • Exemplifies KCS Vision, Values, and Culture in each and every interaction with team, clients, and stakeholders.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university, preferably in Computer Science, Engineering or a related technical discipline

  • Seven (7) years of technology related experience

  • Three (3) years of experience in a systems administration role, preferably including Windows/Linux experience

  • Three (3) years network engineering experience, including understanding of traffic optimization

  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Requirements:

  • Ten (10) years of technology related experience

  • Experience in developing custom scripts, specifically Python
