Job Summary:

Accountable for providing technical MS SQL Server DBA solutions to design, build, deploy, maintain and fulfill code review services for the database environment. The Development DBA is highly competent and highly motivated individual with responsibility for ensuring service levels are maintained by resolving issues and completing project requests in a timely manner. Works diligently to gain a broad understanding of the operating relationships between database environment, infrastructure, and organization's operating business areas.

Works with various BI and .Net development teams within KCS to put code into TFS, developing automated deployment processes, creating database projects, and help troubleshoot performance issues throughout the organization. The DBA will also review current development and deployment strategies to ensure they are correct, and implement changes to drive accuracy and efficiency.

Other responsibilities include operational work, including participating in the weekly on-call rotation, incident management and prevention to ensure that service related issues are resolved quickly and efficiently, responding to database alerts, and general ticket requests - with an expected 70/30 ratio of development to operation work.

The successful Development DBA has a service-oriented mentality, high sense of ownership of the problems/work assigned with a focus on solving issues for the long term, and excellent communication skills refined through interaction with various teams across the organization.

Job Duties:

  • Creates, manages and deploys new code based on a strong understanding and experience in the use Visual Studio Database Projects.

  • Utilizes TFS Source Control and workflows, including process creation and automation of deployments. Understands of source control, branching strategies, GIT, etc. and how to apply to various projects within an organization.

  • Uses native monitoring and troubleshooting tools with experience in Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO).

  • Understands good database development practices and T-SQL.

  • Implements operational automation using scripts. Has experience with Azure SQL, Azure DW, and OLTP environments.

  • Works closely with application developers, infrastructure administrators and business users to develop and provide technical solutions.

  • Exhibits knowledge of backups, restores and recovery models. Also has knowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for MSSQL Server.

  • Completes documentation and has knowledge of indexes, index management, and statistics.

  • Establishes and builds a secure database environment through effective access management.

  • Examines ways to continuously improve processes, architecture, and database designs to improve service levels.

  • Continuously improves quality of processes, architecture, and database designs to provide optimum availability, integrity and performance of company assets.

  • Monitors overall database performance, availability, and integrity. Ensures database recoverability (backup and restore) in the event of disaster or failure through configuration and monitoring of enterprise backup solution.

  • Creates and uses automated tools and techniques to ensure database architecture meets established corporate service levels.

  • Proactively identifies needs and creates processes to monitor database environment for conditions that require remediation action.

  • Provides 24x7 support of database environment through shared on-call rotation. Participates in weekly on-call rotation.

  • Manages data and database structure changes in production and non-production environments.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university - preferably in Computer Science or a related technical discipline

  • Seven (7) years of relevant experience in technical related roles

  • Seven (7) years of relevant Database Administration experience, preferably with administration of Microsoft SQL Server

  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience

Preferred Requirements:

  • SQL Server Database Certifications

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Technology or a related field

  • Experience optimizing code for tables with over one billion records.

  • Experience in indexing strategies for 100+ million table environments in an AlwaysOn Replica setup.

  • Involvement with the MSSQL Server Community; membership in PASS, active in forums or newsgroups.

  • Experience with DB2, Oracle, and/or SAP environments.

  • General understanding of Linux CLI commands.

  • Previous experience in either a consulting, teaching or volunteer role.
