Position Description

This position announcement is for Equipment Operator Sr - Fleet Roadside Assistance, a full-time Civil Service position in General Services. This position is located in the Office of Fleet Management division of the Department of General Services and is responsible for operating various types of large complex vehicles and equipment associated with roadside assistance and for performing other skilled and unskilled labor functions. This position is also responsible for operating heavy and light duty wreckers, heavy and light duty tire trucks, light duty salt trucks, forklifts and any other equipment needed for roadside assistance, recovery and to transport vehicles to and from various locations. Performs related duties as required.

The men and women in Metro’s General Services Department are there to make sure the rest of government works. From ensuring that our city’s vehicles run safely and smoothly, to keeping city buildings up to par to providing printing services and more, General Services is the support that allows other Metro departments to focus and achieve their missions.

Typical Duties

  • Operate heavy and light duty wreckers to transport city vehicles and equipment to and from various different locations.

  • Safely and efficiently operating of wreckers, tires trucks and various other types of equipment.

  • Accurate reading of maps, written directions and the use of hands-free GPS devices.

  • Operate pneumatic, electric and various other hand tools including vehicle lifting and safety equipment like jacks and jack stands.

  • Routine, daily and detailed maintenance, safety checks and services on wreckers, tire trucks and other various equipment.

  • Prepare written documentation of inspections, equipment defects and/or other operational problems.

  • Operate a light duty salt truck to clear parking lots.

  • Maintain and operate equipment and tools.

  • Operate various equipment/vehicles of equal or lesser skill difficulty.

  • Perform other skilled and unskilled labor duties as required.

  • May assist in the training and instruction of lesser skilled employees.

Minimum Qualifications

Eighth (8th) grade education and one (1) year of verifiable experience operating gasoline or diesel-powered equipment or vehicles.

For this specific position, substitutions will not be considered

LICENSE REQUIRED

Valid Class B or higher Commercial Driver License

During the 6 month probationary/training period incumbent must demonstrate sufficient progress related to all required proficiencies in driving and operating equipment using hydraulics, operation of Rollbacks, Boom, Tire and Autoloader Wreckers and reading, comprehending and following street maps and other written directions. Failure to demonstrate the required proficiencies may result in termination of employment.
